SUSTech’s School of Environmental Science and Engineering celebrates its 10th anniversary

On May 10, 2025, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering at the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) celebrated its 10th anniversary at the University’s Convention Center.

More than 200 faculty and staff, current students, and alumni attended the event. In the opening speech by Hongwei FANG, Vice President and Provost of SUSTech, he commended the School’s achievements, noting that it has firmly established itself as a powerhouse for environmental research with an international reputation.

Vice President Hongwei FANG expressed his gratitude to the faculty members, staff, students, and alumni whose contributions have made all of this possible. The School has not only established degree programs conferring bachelors, masters and PhD degrees, it also has won major awards and built research facilities that enabled innovations to flourish. He stressed the significance of further enhancement of collaborations with both domestic and international partners to tackle global environmental challenges in alignment with national strategic needs and public health priorities.

Yan ZHENG, Dean of the School, provided an overview that highlighted the key milestones of the School’s development. Especially worth noting is that guided by the outstanding faculty, many students have done well and are actively pursuing careers in research, education, industry, and business management, bringing with them the deep understanding of and need for sustainable development in their chosen professions.

Reflecting on the School’s original mission, Founding Dean Chunmiao ZHENG noted how marvelous to see the next generation of environmental leaders nurtured by the School, thereby embodying the essence of “starting anew” in a profound and meaningful manner.

Former Deans Youkuan ZHANG and Xin YANG, along with Professor Qing HU who also directs the School’s Engineering Innovation Center (Beijing), all made remarks at the event. They expressed strong confidence in the School’s future, anticipating continued success in research, teaching, and public service, further extending its impact both domestically and internationally.

During the event, attendees witnessed the official launch of the Development Fund of the School, where faculty members, students, and alumni participated by making contributions during the donation ceremony.

A number of distinguished alumni, from undergraduate and graduate students to postdoctoral fellows, shared their personal journeys, professional achievements, and experiences at SUSTech, along with expressions of gratitude and best wishes for their alma mater.

Vice Deans Yuanyuan TANG and Lian FENG also spoke at the event, congratulating the accomplishments of the alumni and wishing them continued success in their careers.

Founded in June 2015, the School of Environmental Science and Engineering aims to innovate by training students with interdisciplinary interests who can tackle global problems for sustainable development. It will further explore opportunities arriving from Environment, Society and Governance (ESG) movement.
