Dr. Dong LU received a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) in 2014. In 2019, Dr. LU was awarded as high-level talents in Guangdong Province. Currently, he serves as Division Manager, Center Manager in Guangzhou Fok Ying Tung Research Institute (FYTRI) of HKUST, Adjunct Associate Professor in SDIM of SUSTech. Dr. LU have long been engaged in novel materials innovation and its applications, including strengthening and toughening polymer materials, lightweight design and fracture mechanisms for composite materials, polymer processing, advanced electrospinning technology, novel functional inorganic membranes and materials characterization et al. In the study of natural inorganic nanotube-Halloysite nanotubes, Dr. LU directly measured the mechanical properties of single halloysite nanotubes for the first time in the world, and quantitatively explained its toughening and strengthening effects in polymer materials which was an important contribution to academic community. In addition, Dr. LU applied the basic theory of materials to the reliability evaluation and failure analysis of IC chips and high- performance microelectronics devices, helping world’s top IC packaging companies to solve large number of complicated engineering issues in this field and have been widely recognized by industrial partners.

In the last 5 years, Dr. LU have served as PI or core member of numerous government key projects and received a total of more than 40 million yuan in research funding from commercial and government projects which achieved a series of excellent scientific outcomes with great industrial prospects.

 

Research Interests

  • Processing-morphology-property relationships of polymer and polymer composites or nanocomposite;
  • The fracture and toughening mechanisms of engineering materials;
  • Characterization and failure mechanisms of microelectronic packaging materials and failure analysis of IC packages;
  • Novel functional inorganic membranes.
