Professor Chen received his PhD in Geophysics from University of Southern California (USC) in 1991. He was a research associate at USC between 1992 and 1996. From 1996 to 2008, he was a professor at Peking University and from 2008 to 2016 at University of Science and Technology of China. He joined SUSTech in September 2016 and was appointed as an initiatory departmental head of Earth and Space Sciences. He has authored or co-authored more than 260 technical papers in geophysics and has mentored over 80 graduate students. He has led more than 40 scientific research projects such as the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) Distinguished Young Scholars project, the outstanding innovation group project, the key projects, the international (regional) cooperation projects, scientific research  project of the Ministry of Science of China. Professor Chen’s research interests include: theoretical and computational geophysics, seismology, as well as their applications in Earthquake hazard mitigation and earth resources exploration.
