Shenzhen's a new city, founded in 1979 – it's so young that many of our faculty are older than the city itself! As a result, Shenzhen is full of exciting new things, and it's constantly growing and expanding at what we call "Shenzhen speed."
Whether you and your friends decide to head to the beach for the day, have a picnic in one of the many parks around the city, or take a day trip to Hong Kong or Guangzhou – the options are endless!
As a SUSTech student, you'll be uniquely placed to get around easily and take advantage of all these unique opportunities in Shenzhen, Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta.
About Shenzhen
Shenzhen is located at the southern tip of the Chinese mainland on the eastern bank of the mouth of the Pearl River and neighbors Hong Kong.
The brainchild of Deng Xiaoping, the country's first special economic zone was established here by the Chinese Government in 1980. It has been a touchstone for China's reform and opening-up policy since then.
Since 1980, the population has exploded, with an estimated population of 20 million people within the city borders. Shenzhen has the largest migrant population in China, with people coming from all parts of the country and indeed all over the world to make their fortune.
Shenzhen typically enjoys a cool, dry winter and a hot, wet summer. Although it's not hot by some standards, it certainly feels that way to some, and that's usually due to the humidity typical of these subtropical parts. With humidity often above 80% from April into October, many staff and students take umbrellas with them every day – they just don't know when it's going to rain! Shenzhen is known for getting a lot of rain – up to 2 meters per year, and sometimes it can feel like it all lands in one day!
The biggest industries and employers in Shenzhen are high technology firms. In fact, there's a pretty good chance that you've bought something that was made in Shenzhen. Mobile phone manufacturers like Huawei, OnePlus, and ZTE are all headquartered here, as well as drone makers DJI, modem manufacturers TP-Link, television company Skyworth and Tencent, one of the biggest companies in the world, is headquartered about 30 minutes' drive from our campus. All these companies, and more like to recruit from our student base, as our graduates are known for the skill sets they have developed over their time here.
