Brief Introduction

Nuclear astrophysics and unstable nuclei physics are frontiers of nuclear physics research. Together with his team colleagues, Prof. Liu established the first unstable beam line in CIAE, China. Based on systematic research work based on this facility and Tandem accelerator for more than 30 years, he has successfully developed the research field of experimental nuclear astrophysics in China. The research works were performed by applying innovative idea of indirect measurement of important reaction rates via ANC/spectroscopic factor approach. The highlight among them includes a unique contribution of solar neutrino production and absorption cross section via reaction and decay studies, as well as resonance contribution of neutron source and holy grail reaction. Furthermore, leading his team members, important nuclear astrophysics progress was recent commissioning of JUNA collaboration base on CJPL underground lab., JUNA is commissioned in 2020 and high precision result of direct measurement of important nuclear astrophysics reaction near Gamow window with world-leading results published from 2021, for pinning down the fate of Fluorine and for better understanding astrophysical gamma-ray production from 26Al,  13C neutron source reactions as well as Ca abundance in the oldest stars with top publications.

Research Plan

Carry out the construction of the JUNA Phase II of the Jinping Deep Underground Laboratory CJPL, and apply for funds, including major instrument projects of NSFC, projects from Guangdong and Shenzhen, etc.

Using INAC and JUNA as platforms, establish a research center for nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics, by introducing international talents in particle, nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics, and create a world-class experimental research center in particle, nuclear physics and nuclear astrophysics The team has made JUNA one of the main forces of CJPL in China's deep field laboratory, and will help CJPL build an international center in the future. The center will provide important support for CJPL's major physical achievement output and subsequent development. In the future, the center will apply for the Central Project from NSFC and the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education and the State Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Science and Technology, combining the advantages in science and engineering of SUSTech, to promote the intersection of astrophysics and particle and nuclear physics, and to promote the output of major basic research results.

Promote cooperation with China National Nuclear Corporation, promote the cooperation and transformation of scientific and technological innovation achievements and the nuclear industry; promote contact with national ministries and commissions of applied technology, and promote schools to undertake large-scale scientific research projects. Taking advantage of cooperation with aerospace, actively plan development in the field of space science in the future, such as developing space gamma-ray satellites and analyzing space samples. Actively promote the cooperation of the ISOL project in Beijing or elsewhere, a major infrastructure in national nuclear science, including co-construction with China Institute of Atomic Energy in the new base, settlement in other sites, and the possibility of integrated development with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

In a few years, the "Nuclear Physics and Nuclear Astrophysics Experiment Center/Lab" will be established, and great efforts will be made to cultivate and introduce outstanding talents at home and abroad as soon as possible, including overseas outstanding professors or associate professors, and many postdoctoral, doctoral and master's degrees.
