The laboratory's key research focus is the interaction between cells and cellular microenvironment. It uses model organisms, cell technology, molecular technology, engineering simulation and other research methods to conduct a multi-level, multi-dimensional and multi-disciplinary research of the important functions of cellular microenvironment interactions in human diseases, development and biological agriculture. The research directions of the laboratory include: development of nano-imprinting equipment, nano-imprinting technology and materials, as well as the application research of nano-imprinting technology. It strives to obtain a number of original intellectual property rights and patents in key equipment, processes and materials, engineering applications, etc. to fill the void of Shenzhen, Guangdong and China in the field of high-end nano-imprinting technology, thus lay the foundation for successful industrialization and economic benefits in the later period. Shenzhen Key Laboratory of the Third Generation Semi-conductor
The third-generation semiconductor materials, represented by wide bandgap gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC), have shown great potential in high voltage, high power, high frequency and high efficiency applications. We focus on the research of third-generation semiconductor devices, including GaN power devices fabrication and packaging. By solving key problems in silicon based GaN substrate epitaxy, GaN based device fabrication as well as reliability study for power applications, we have achieved high quality CMOS-line-compatible silicon based GaN power device. We have also developed high-sensitivity sensors for biological and chemical applications, and high-performance switching devices for flat panel displays. We aim to establish an open platform and the "industry-academia-research" integration mode. Our lab are active in international/domestic academic and scientific exchanges. Currently, our lab have built a complete 6-inch CMOS process line, including EBL, mask aligner, RIE, E-beam evaporator, LPCVD, ALD, ICP, PECVD, etc. This lab has advanced the technological progress and the self-innovation ability of third-generation semiconductor applications in China. We develop the core technologies with our own intellectual property portfolio, and accelerate the application of third-generation semiconductor through the industrialization of our device products.

The laboratory concentrates on the development of new high-performance organic semiconductor materials, and develops material systems for field effect transistors, solar cells and photodetectors with independent intellectual property rights. It establishes a characterization platform related to molecular structure, photoelectric properties, etc., and comprehensively characterizes the material properties in order to optimize the materials. The laboratory focuses on the solution printing process of organic semiconductor materials, and achieves high-throughput, large-area and flexible substrate printing processing of organic semiconductor materials through molecular structure, additives and solvent control. It has established a comprehensive organic semiconductor printing electronic research platform, with domestically leading and internationally renowned research capabilities.

In response to the needs of China's water and soil pollution prevention and control, the laboratory actively carries out underground water and soil pollution exploration, rapid detection, pollution simulation, pollution assessment, health risk assessment and restoration on the basis of major basic research on underground water and soil pollution and other technical development and environmental consulting and engineering services, combined with social needs. It aims to promote the scientific and technological development of water and soil pollution environmental protection industry in Shenzhen, and establish a laboratory and technical support platform for soil, underground water pollution investigation, evaluation, management, planning and decision-making in Shenzhen, and become a think tank for soil and underground water pollution restoration and management in Shenzhen.
Shenzhen Municipal Key Laboratory Of Hydrogen Energy
The main research and development task of the laboratory is to build a Shenzhen municipal key laboratory sharing platform which uses electrolyzed water to produce hydrogen. The platform possesses the design, assembly and testing capabilities of the PEM electrolyzed water hydrogen production system. The laboratory focuses on the technology of hydrogen production with acidic electrolyzed water. It has mastered the process and engineering techniques of key components such as catalysts, bipolar plates and single cells. The specific research and development tasks are as follows: (1) Research on non-precious metal hydrogen evolution electrocatalytic materials and hydrogen evolution electrodes for hydrogen production from PEM electrolyzed water; (2) Design and integrated fluid simulation of single cells for hydrogen production by PEM electrolysis; (3) Research on stack consistency and system integration design. The goal is to establish a key laboratory for hydrogen energy technology based on PEM electrolysis to fill the domestic technical gap in this field and to lay the foundation for the industrialization of hydrogen energy technology in Shenzhen. In the short term, the Southern University of Science and Technology and Shenzhen will be upgraded to the international leading level in the field of hydrogen preparation technology.
Key Laboratory Of Full Spectrum Power Generation Function Material
The laboratory focuses on the research and development of solar full-spectrum power generation technology, focusing on the development of solar spectrum spectroscopic and concentrating materials, new high-efficiency photovoltaic materials and devices, and high heat capacity thermal storage materials. Professor He Zhubing from the Department of Materials and Professor He Zhenyu from the Department of Chemistry of Southern University of Science and Technology will serve as deputy directors of the laboratory, and 22 full-time researchers, including 10 doctoral researchers will be allocated. The laboratory now has advanced composite optical coating system, PECVD, PVD, ALD and other thin film physical deposition equipment, and a complete chemical synthesis and detection and characterization platform. Up to now, it has published more than 20 papers in international top academic journals such as Adv. Mater., Angew. Chem. Int., and applied for nearly 30 patents. The photovoltaic cell champion efficiency is close to 20%, and a number of high-quality optical film material design and preparation process technologies have been developed.

The laboratory implements an “open, mobile, joint, and competitive” operational mechanism, and implements a director responsibility system under the leadership of the supporting unit and guidance of the academic committee. The director of the laboratory is Professor Liu Chongxuan, Professor Zhang Zuitai will be the Executive Director. The laboratory is planned to be equipped with 26 researchers, including 3 academic leaders. The laboratory focuses on high-density direct-drive technology and non-contact magnetic shifting technology. By exploring new theories and new methods of electromagnetic energy conversion of electric motors, it develops new electric energy production and utilizing technologies, and promotes their application in new energy generation, electric drive, high efficiency and energy saving, etc., ultimately, it plans to serve the transformation and upgrade of new energy and equipment manufacturing industries in the Pearl River Delta region. The laboratory is located in Dapeng New District, Shenzhen. The site covers an area of 650 square meters. It has a 100-kilowatt electromechanical energy conversion test platform and a medium-sized machining center. It can carry out new prototype trials and system performance tests. The laboratory will combine the industry and geographical advantages of Dapeng New District to actively promote the technology research and development and transformation of marine power transmission equipment and offshore direct-drive wind power equipment.

The Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Natural Gas Hydrates is organized by Academy for Advanced Interdisciplinary Studies at SUSTech. The main task is focusing on cutting-edge scientific researches in the fields of natural gas hydrate, and related high-pressure science and technology, focusing on the sustainable development and utilization of marine resources, combining with the advantages of large scientific platform, and targeted industry in the Greater Bay Area. The laboratory scientific researches include but not limited: the exploitation of natural gas hydrates; establishment of accurate and applicable theoretical models; critical parameters for the safe exploitation of natural gas hydrates. Based on the development and application of innovated science and technology for natural gas hydrate, complex integration of novel and comprehensive characterization technology of natural gas hydrate is designed. Through research on natural gas hydrates in simulated hydrogeological conditions, including the development and operation of multi-dimensional test systems and the establishment of accurate theoretical models, it will cooperate with the relevant institutes in Shenzhen and across the country to carry out hydrate trial mining simulations. Shenzhen key laboratory of interfacial science and application engineering of materials is based on interfacial science. It aims to design and develop new interfacial functional materials and to build up the methods of controlling the interfacial behaviors in complex systems, utilizing the combination of various skills, including preparation of advanced materials, surface functionalization, interfacial mass transfer, wettability monitoring and environmental engineering. The ultimate purpose of this lab is to solve the increasing challenges of environmental pollution and resource shortage as a result of the fast development of new and traditional energy industries.
The research areas of this laboratory include efficient resource utilization of spent lithium battery industry, waste treatment and reutilization of oily soil, preparation of high capacity lithium battery materials, development of superhydrophobic materials and responsive magnetic interface materials.

The shenzhen key laboratory of energy chemistry was founded on the basis of the college of science, Southern University of Science and Technology. It focuses on the fundamental and applied research on the chemical conversion of energy, and takes the development of clean energy as the central task. Original scientific instruments are also developed in the laboratory in order to better solve specific key scientific questions. Systematic and in-depth research on key issues in energy conversion (such as photocatalytic hydrogen production, the mechanism of interaction between atoms and molecules at surface, the energy transfer between atoms and molecules, the interaction mechanism between clusters and carriers, etc.) has been conducted too. Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Robotics Perception and Intelligence (P) mainly carries out science & technology innovation and talent cultivation in the fields of robotics, robot perception and intelligence. The laboratory focuses on the cutting-edge foundational theories and core technologies of robot perception and intelligence, aiming to tackle the technical difficulties and challenges of robots in practical applications. The laboratory performs research related to intelligent human-robot interaction problems in densely populated dynamic environments and its solutions in the medical and service fields. The laboratory's research results will enable robots to work efficiently in scenes with dynamic complex structures and dense crowds, and make original contributions to the realization of the national scientific and technological innovation and development goals. We are also interested in the research of pharyngeal swab nucleic acid sampling robot, venous blood sampling and injection robot, tracheal intubation robot, ultrasound scanning robot, and medical image analysis, and strives to accomplish the prototype development and application demonstration of the world's first intelligent interaction and manipulation robot system for replacing medical staff in infectious wards.

Shenzhen Engineering Research Center For Coal Comprehensive Utilization (SCCCU)
Shenzhen Engineering Research Center for Coal Comprehensive Utilization (SCCCU) is supported by the Shenzhen Municipal Government and established at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). SCCCU mainly focuses on the technical fields of clean and high value-added utilization of low-quality coal and other mineral resources, including exploration on the core disciplines of highly efficient dissociation and separation of mineral particles at micro/nanoscale, novel processing methods of combustibles and minerals in coal, and integrated development of clean and high value-added utilization technology for low-quality coal. The R&D objectives of SCCCU are to obtain process and equipment for high-efficiency dissociation and separation of mineral particles, process, and equipment for high-calorific coal water slurry preparation, core additives for mineral separation and its applications, high value-added carbon materials, and novel natural mineral-based soil amendments.
The Shenzhen Materials Genome Large Scientific Device Platform
The Shenzhen Materials Genome Large Scientific Device Platform consists of a High Throughput Synthesis Platform, High-Throughput Characterization Platform, High-throughput Neutron Diffraction Platform, and High-throughput Calculation and AI Technology Platform. The High Throughput Synthesis Platform aims to establish a combinatorial material synthesis process covering all stable elements in the periodic table. It can deal with one-dimensional fibers, two-dimensional thin films, and three-dimensional porous material preparation. The High-Throughput Characterization Platform will be developed to match with the high-throughput synthesis platform. It will be capable of advanced micro-zone, in-situ, fast-speed, multi-parameter, multi-dimensional, and cross-scale characterization of electrical, thermal, magnetic, and mechanical properties. The High-Pressure Neutron Spectrometer in the High-throughput Neutron Diffraction Platform can realize the neutron diffraction and imaging under extreme conditions such as ultra-high pressure, (extreme) low temperature, and strong magnetic field. It will enable collaborative in-situ measurement of mechanical, thermal, acoustic，optical，electrical parameters under various extreme conditions. The Neutron Powder Diffraction Spectrometer possesses ultra-high-resolution, enabling breakthrough structural analysis for advanced energy material, biomedical material, electrical material, etc. High-throughput Calculation and AI Technology Platform establishes a comprehensive material database management system, accomplishing unified data management of bigdata originating from various sources. The Materials Genome Scientific Infrastructure will reach the goal of material design on-demand through intensive integration of high-throughput experiments, high-throughput calculation, and artificial intelligence big data analysis. It will serve the development of the new material industry in the Greater Bay Area.

International Center For Mathematics
The SUSTech International Center for Mathematics, officially established on February 22, 2019, is a scientific research center funded by Shenzhen Municipal Government and located at Southern University of Science and Technology. The Scientific Director is Fields Medalist Efim Zelmanov.
It aims to advance scientific research in pure mathematics as well as applied and computational mathematics in Shenzhen, the Greater Bay Area, and beyond. The Center will focus on important research fields in both pure and applied mathematics. Its primary goal is to promote basic research in mathematics and advance interdisciplinary research of mathematics in life science, information science, engineering, and finance, etc.
The governing of the Center will follow international standards for major global mathematics centers. It provides a first-class research environment for researchers and visitors alike, hosting annual thematic programs and focused research groups.
Research Institute Of Trustworthy Autonomous Systems (RITAS)
The Research Institute of Trustworthy Autonomous Systems (RITAS) was officially announced by the Shenzhen Municipality on 1 November 2019, with a total investment of 100 million RMB over five years. It is led by Turing Award Laureate, Professor Joseph Sifakis, a Distinguished Visiting Professor from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), as the Institute Director, and assisted by Professor Xin Yao as the Executive Director of RITAS. Currently, RITAS has 30 professors (PIs), of which 8 are IEEE fellows and over 70 research fellows, postdoctoral researchers, and research students. RITAS’s mission is to carry out both fundamental and applied research in trustworthy AI systems using a highly interdisciplinary approach by bringing people together from artificial intelligence, computer science, system engineering, mathematics, operations research, cognitive science, and psychology. It covers five major areas, including autonomous driving, smart cities, AI and medicine, machine learning systems, and trustworthy software systems. The common theme cutting across all these areas is trustworthiness --- how can we develop trustworthy autonomous systems? What does trustworthiness mean for an application scenario? How to measure trustworthiness? These are some of the primary research questions that will be addressed by RITAS. RITAS has three essential pillars to support its growth and long-term sustainability, including the cultivation of research talents, international cooperation, and knowledge transfer to industry. It recruits international talents with the most competitive pay packages and ample research funding. It has an open and stimulating environment for young researchers to grow and develop their careers. It aspires to become a world-class research institute in trustworthy autonomous systems and their applications.
The Financial Technology And Financial Innovation Research Center Of SUSTech
The Financial Technology and Financial Innovation Research Center of SUSTech is one of the first seven key research bases of Humanities and Social Sciences in Shenzhen, approved by Professor Susheng WANG of the Department of Finance. It has three primary research directions: financial science and technology research, China's financial stability research, and financial insurance actuarial research. The Research Center will focus on the fundamental and cutting-edge high-end research-oriented problems. Its Shenzhen location allows it to concentrate on the real issues in China's financial reform and development represented by financial technology (fintech). The research of financial technology focuses on solving the key problems encountered in the industrialization process of new technology. It serves the Shenzhen Municipal Government, while also provides supervision suggestions for reducing the risk of financial science and technology. The Research Center will provide for commercial application and technology incubation, combs financial technology business, and analyzes possible risks. It will promote the coordinated development of financial science, technology, industry, education, and research. The Research Center should serve not only Shenzhen but also provide demonstrative models for the construction of a national financial science and technology base. It will build a world-class financial think tank and fintech business incubation platform integrating industry-university research platforms while providing professional support for promoting China's financial innovation and maintaining innovative financial stability.
Intelligent Management And Innovation Development Research Center Of SUSTech
The research area of this Research Center is "Intelligent Management and Innovation Development," including but not limited to intelligent management and innovative development of social governance, supply chain management, big data financial intelligent management and innovation, data-driven intelligent decision-making and innovation policy research. The Research Center will focus on three directions: information technology-based credit management and policy research, intelligent manufacturing and supply chain management, and big data-driven financial management. These three directions combine the current industrial advantages of Shenzhen while remaining consistent with important trends in Shenzhen's future economic development plan. The Research Center aims to enhance the refined management level of city management and develop new management methods and management technologies. It will also strive to improve the scientific management capabilities of Shenzhen Municipal Government and enterprises and public institutions to provide a powerful force for Shenzhen to catch up and surpass.
The Cultural Heritage Research Center Of SUSTech
The Cultural Heritage Research Center at SUSTech is supported by SUSTech Center for Social Sciences and its related department. The task is based on the cultural heritage resources in Shenzhen. The center selects research topics of those with high demand from the society, with great practical significance, and can “breathe life” into culture heritage. The current jobs of the center are sorting archaeological materials and data of Shenzhen and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and researching on prehistory of Shenzhen.
